Trizonia

Trizonia

Allegedly named after the chirping sound of the crickets (‘trizonia’ in Greek), this miniature island could easily pass as a private property. With an area of approximately 750 acres, the island has

been inhabited since the times of the Ottoman Turks. Remains of the oldest buildings are visible at Mahalas, close to the main church. Initially used as a pest-house, the island came under the rule of Ali Pasha of Ioaninna after 1821.

Stamatogiannis, the brother of Kyra Frosini, was the first Greek who decided to join the few local shepherds and live permanently on Trizonia. By 1928, the population had grown to one hundred families but today, the number of local residents is hardly 70-80 people. Strikingly enough, Trizonia features a modern marina, which was built 10 years ago and is ready to hold up to 150 boats. Trizonia is popular among those travelling in the area. There are 2-3 beaches suitable for swimming - Punta, Aspra and Kokina Halikia – which you can reach either on foot, or by boat.

During winter, local residents lead a simple life: fishing, short visits to Patras or Nafpaktos, daily work at the few remaining olive groves and vineyards. In other words, a lifestyle that should be medically prescribed for those who wish to rid the toxins of modern urban life.
